If you are a true child of God who is committed to serving the Lord, you will attract the attention of many, and that will also result in having many enemies. You must, however, know that it is not you they are fighting, but God whom you are serving.

The mistake we often make is to take the battle personally, thinking that they are fighting us because of our personal dispositions and attainments. And in turn, we tend to fight back by whatever personal effort we can afford. We develop bitterness, hatred, and all negative feelings toward our enemies. That way, we fall into the temptation of Satan and hinder God from fighting on our behalf.

Oftentimes, we may not be in a position to fight those who fight us; they may be advantaged over us materially, academically, and otherwise. Yet these people consider us a threat. This is because of the Spirit of God at work in us that provokes the wicked spirits at work in them. It is the name of Christ for which we live that they fight not us as people. The name is our identity and pride that makes us who we are.

Therefore, people who fight us because of the gospel are fighting Christ not us. Our responsibility is to pray and let Christ fight His way. When we assume to do the fight, we take the place of Christ and are likely to get defeated and get the name of Christ ridiculed. And we should not also assume that it is because of our righteousness that Christ is defending and fighting for us either. When we think that way, pride could spring up and cost us our spiritual sensitivity, losing our guard. We must always understand that when God acts on our behalf, it’s for His name’s sake so that His name will not be ridiculed before the wicked.

Today, there are many battles true Christian’s fight, especially within the church circle. This is simply because the visible church is a religious institution with few true children of God in its midst. They suffer spiritual, emotional, and even physical persecution right in the church. The church's temptation to take the struggle personally is great. You must not forget that you are simply an agent of God’s kingdom, the body of Christ. You are simply a representative of the kingdom. Christ has promised to be with us to the very end of the age. The battle is His. Let Him through your prayers. Do not take it upon yourself. You cannot face these giants. You will only end up fighting an unnecessary battle. Let Christ simply bring forth the victory to bear in your situation. And then you hold forth your peace.

You could be the one who receives the act and confrontation personally, but beyond you, they are fighting God because of the Spirit of God in you and the name of Christ you bear and for whom you live.
